Arlington Alert on Twitter

June 5, 2008 | 12:46 am

In the past week I’ve really taken a shining to Twitter. I posted about its value the other day in a reflection on my social life and used it today a bit to track the crazy storm (complete with tornadoes within the beltway) that came through the DC metro area.

I got an idea from a tweet (the proper name for a “post” on Twitter) that a friend of mine wrote in which he mentioned a service called Arlington Alert which sends you a text message or email when there are disastrous things going on in the area and I thought, “I wonder if they have a Twitter account to follow.”

They didn’t.

Honestly, I can’t complain. I live in a city that has updates for alerts that can go out through SMS (text messages), email and RSS Feeds… RSS feeds huh?! That’s when the idea hit me. I can create an account for Arlington Alert on Twitter and run it off the RSS feed that they provide.

And, here it is:

@ArlingtonAlert

Enjoy.

    Brilliant idea! I\’ve used TwitterFeed in the past but turned it off. But I hadn\’t thought of taking someone else\’s rss and turn it into a twitter acct!

    Someone actually did that for our head pastor’s blog and they have no idea who set it up. It’s nothing but the links to his posts, but we don’t know who set it up. Weird.

    We were able to take control of Pastor Mark’s Twitter account and have him using it regularly now. It was VERY tough to find out who had the account. Twitter’s privacy policy is in full force by their staff. However, I have recently learned that you can stop someone who is posting to Twitter falsely. They have some steps you can take to preserve your name, especially if you are a higher profile individual.

    I’d say it might be polite to let Arlington Alert know that you’ve hooked them up. Or set the email address for the account to the email address of the web admin there. :)

    P.S. Your CAPTCHA system is crap. :) I had to enter it more than 10 times to get it.

    Dave, you’re probably right. I’ll send them an email.
